A year of determination and effort by the St. Helens members lead by Mayor Len Picken culminated in the dedication of the new memorial to the victims of the Wharnecliffe and Woodmoor colliery disaster.Labour councillors, MPs, comrades, trade unions and relatives gathered in Athersley to commemorate the pit disaster in August 1936 that claimed 58 lives. Unveiling the restored sculpture and winding wheel at the entrance to the new business park on the colliery site Len, a schoolboy at the time, gave a moving speech recounting his memories of the day.
He then lead the large number gathered in attendance in a minutes silence before the dedication.
